AMMC Mandates Builders' Liability Insurance in Abuja

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), represented by Deputy Director of the Department of Development Control, Mr. Ajibad Olayinka, announced the enforcement of mandatory builders' liability insurance for construction projects in Abuja.

This initiative, introduced to protect construction workers, property owners, and the general public from hazards associated with building projects, is part of a centralized digital platform designed for managing insurance submissions and approvals. The scheme aims to improve compliance with the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025, which requires any construction above one floor to obtain insurance coverage.

Failure to comply may result in a fine of 5 million Naira or a 12-month prison term. Dr.

Sammi Olaniyi urged stakeholders to ensure compliance and maintain insurance coverage until project completion. The initiative seeks to address issues of worker compensation in cases of accidents and to reduce incidents of building collapses due to negligence and substandard materials.
