INEC Chair Amupitan Warns Electoral Officers on Integrity

On Monday in Lagos, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), addressed electoral officers at the South-West Zonal Interactive meeting, emphasizing the necessity of integrity in their roles for the upcoming 2027 general elections. He warned that misconduct, including partisan leaning and administrative negligence, would not be tolerated, asserting that the integrity of the electoral process must be upheld.

Amupitan highlighted the importance of neutrality, stating that electoral officers must administer elections without favoritism towards any candidate or political party. He reiterated that the Electoral Act mandates staff to swear an oath of loyalty and neutrality, committing them to act without bias.

Furthermore, he cautioned against improvising solutions when legal procedures are already established, urging officers to adhere strictly to the law and Commission guidelines. Amupitan concluded that the credibility of the 2027 elections hinges on the faithful implementation of the law by electoral officials.
