Anambra State Strengthens Law Against Energy Theft

The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) has approved a review of the Electricity Law to combat energy theft and vandalism. This decision was made during a meeting held at Light House, Awka, with State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Law Mefor PhD, announcing the amendments.

The revised law will introduce stiffer penalties, including hefty fines and longer prison terms for offenders, aiming to protect public assets and ensure consumers pay only for what they consume. Furthermore, the government is finalizing a bill to establish Community Administrations as the fourth tier of government, which will have defined responsibilities and budgets to enhance grassroots governance.

Mefor also confirmed the Council's commitment to continue paying the salaries of 3,500 teachers employed in mission-returned schools, part of a larger recruitment initiative by Gov Charles Soludo, who hired 8,115 teachers for primary and secondary schools. The Council will enforce minimum standards in education and health sectors, shutting down facilities that do not comply.
