Ondo State Amends Electricity Law to Enhance Power Sector

On Thursday, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State assented to the State Electric Power Sector (Amendment) Law, 2026, which amends the Ondo State Electric Power Sector Law, 2020. This new legislation aligns the state's electricity framework with Nigeria's Electricity Act, 2023.

A significant feature of the law is the establishment of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) as an independent body to oversee electricity activities, regulate tariffs, and manage licenses for generation, transmission, and distribution. The law also mandates compulsory metering for electricity sellers and consumers, ensuring direct service relationships.

Additionally, it introduces legal protections for community-financed electricity infrastructure and creates the offence of "Electricity Infrastructure Expansion Sabotage," with penalties including a ₦2 million fine. The Equipment Standards and Competence Certification Agency (ESCCA) will inspect and certify electrical equipment, while the Ondo State Power Company will be empowered to invest in various electricity projects.

This framework aims to boost investor confidence in Ondo's power sector.
