Anambra Communities Protest Demolition for Power Lines

Indigenes of Nnobi and Awka Etiti in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State protested against the planned demolition of their homes to facilitate power transmission lines. They urged the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to adhere to the original pathway established 15 years ago for electricity transmission from Obosi substation to Nnewi.
Chief JoeMartin Uzodike, an elder statesman and former commissioner for Information and Culture in Anambra State, criticized TCN for not consulting the affected communities before marking properties for demolition. He emphasized that the state government should not allow itself to be used as a tool for displacement and destruction.
Uzodike highlighted that under the Land Use Act, individuals have permanent rights to their ancestral lands, which cannot be revoked without proper compensation and negotiations. The communities called on both federal and state authorities, including Gov. Charles Soludo, to intervene and halt the planned demolitions, advocating for a fair resolution to protect their rights to life and livelihood.
