Two Sentenced to Death for Rape and Murder in Anambra

On a Wednesday, an Anambra State High Court in Ogidi, presided over by Justice U. Ndigw, sentenced two men, Elochukwu Belonwu and Chukwuebuka Ofokwu, to death by hanging for the rape and murder of 17-year-old Jennifer Anen, who was mentally impaired.

The charges were brought under suit no. HID 23C 2021.

The prosecution proved three counts against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt. The case stemmed from an incident on November 25, 2020, when Jennifer was reported missing by her grandfather, Elder Piu Anen.

She was later found unconscious and died shortly after being taken to the hospital. An autopsy revealed signs of aggravated sexual assault.

The prosecution presented evidence, including eyewitness accounts and a postmortem report. Despite the defense's denial of the allegations, the court upheld the conviction, emphasizing the need for justice for vulnerable members of society.
