Anambra Promotes Family Conversations to Combat HIV

Anambra State has called on families to address HIV through open discussions at home to enhance prevention, testing, and treatment access while reducing stigma. Dr.

Nkem Okek, Executive Director of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), made this appeal during an interview, stressing that combating HIV is not solely the responsibility of the government or healthcare professionals. He urged families and communities to engage in regular conversations about the disease, which would promote early testing and inspire healthier lifestyle choices among young people and adults.

Okek highlighted the need for collective efforts involving parents, guardians, community leaders, and media stakeholders to raise awareness and strengthen preventive measures. The ANSACA also launched the "Healthy Live HIV Control Initiative" on June 18, aiming to accelerate the state's response to HIV/AIDS and achieve zero new infections by 2030.

The event in Awka gathered government officials, traditional rulers, and civil society organizations to commit to building an AIDS-free Anambra State.
