Yoruba Actor Chief Alabi Ogundepo Passes Away at 84

Chief Alabi Ogundepo, a distinguished Yoruba actor and poet, died on Monday, August 24, at the age of 84. He was renowned for his mastery of Ijala, the traditional oral poetry of Yoruba hunters, and dedicated decades to preserving this vital aspect of Nigeria's indigenous culture.

Born in Saki, Ogundepo became a respected figure in Yoruba oral tradition. His family released a statement honoring him as a "remarkable literary voice" whose works reflected a profound appreciation for Yoruba culture, language, and history.

The statement was signed by his daughter, Mrs. Dupe Ogundepo-Falana, who expressed gratitude to those who offered condolences. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, as the family requested privacy during their mourning period.

Ogundepo's passing occurred less than 24 hours after the death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, who succumbed to cancer in his hometown of Ilaro.
