APON Calls for Global Support to Revitalize UI Zoo

The Animal Protection Organisation of Nigeria (APON) has urged for international support to rehabilitate and revitalize the University of Ibadan Zoological Garden. Following an inspection, APON identified urgent needs for investment in modern infrastructure, improved animal welfare systems, and a more diverse animal population.

The assessment revealed a decline in animal diversity, with only a lone giraffe, limited chimpanzees and lions, and no gorillas or zebras present. APON emphasized that its assessment aimed to find sustainable solutions rather than assign blame.

To address these challenges, APON proposed establishing an international funding mechanism for developing modern animal habitats, enhancing safety systems, and creating a dedicated veterinary facility. The organization also suggested replacing outdated cages with environments that better replicate natural habitats.

Ambassador Joseph Odika, the founder and Executive Director of APON, called for an emergency infrastructure and repopulation fund, asserting that a revitalized zoo would enhance its educational and conservation functions. Advisers to APON stressed prioritizing infrastructure and animal welfare before expanding the animal population.
