Nigerian Transport Unions Advocate Mandatory Rider Profiling Amid Rising Attacks

The Amalgam Union of App-Based Transport Workers of Nigeria (AUATWON) and the African Forum for Restorative Justice (AFRJ) are urging for mandatory rider profiling in the app-based transport sector in Nigeria. This call was made during a panel in Abuja where incidents of robberies, carjackings, kidnappings, and fatal attacks involving ride-hailing platforms were discussed.

Damola Adeniro, the President of AUATWON, emphasized the need for rider profiling to enhance security and prevent further victimization. The proposal includes the mandatory verification of users through the National Identification Number (NIN) to restore trust and ensure the safety of workers and national security.

Prof. DonJohn Omal highlighted the importance of proper profiling to aid victims who may lack resources to pursue legal battles effectively.

The event aimed to address labor relations in the digital economy, where workers often face risks due to ambiguous employment relationships and lack of social protection.
