Lagos Bolt, Uber Drivers Launch Three-Day Strike

Drivers for Bolt and Uber in Lagos State have initiated a three-day strike, as announced by Steven Iwindoy, the Public Relations Officer of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transport Workers Nigeria, during a press conference on Sunday. The strike is a response to ongoing complaints regarding poor working conditions and fares that do not reflect the current economic realities.

Drivers are facing increased operational costs due to high fuel prices, vehicle maintenance expenses, and inflation, which have made it difficult for them to earn a sustainable income despite working long hours. During the strike, drivers across Lagos will log off from ride-hailing applications, effectively suspending services throughout the state.

The union has outlined ten key demands, including an immediate review of fares to align with fuel prices and inflation, a reduction in commission charges from ride-hailing companies, the introduction of a regulated minimum base fare, and improvements in rider verification systems and safety measures, including emergency panic buttons and comprehensive insurance coverage for drivers.
