Lagos Uber and Bolt Drivers Strike Over Low Fares

Drivers for Uber and Bolt in Lagos State commenced a three-day strike on Sunday, as announced by Steven Iwindoy, a representative of the Amalgam Union of App-Based Transport Nigeria. This industrial action is a response to prolonged complaints regarding poor working conditions and unsustainable fare structures that do not reflect rising operational costs.

Drivers are facing increased fuel prices, higher vehicle maintenance costs, and inflation, which have eroded their earnings despite long working hours. The union's strike aims to press for urgent reforms in the app-based transport sector, with drivers expected to log off from the ride-hailing platforms during the strike.

The union presented ten demands to the ride-hailing companies and government authorities, including an immediate fare review to align with current fuel and maintenance costs, a reduction in commission charges, and the introduction of a regulated minimum base fare. The strike highlights the economic pressures faced by drivers in the app-based transport industry.
