Archbishop Kawas Defends Bishops' Political Involvement

On September 13, 2026, Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, President-General of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), defended the bishops' political involvement during an interview on ARISE News. He stated that he was never called a "fake bishop" for supporting political figures like former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Peter Obi.

Kawas highlighted that the CBCN has been actively praying for political leaders since 2010, driven by a desire for Nigeria's betterment rather than personal interests. He recalled leading prayers for Obasanjo's political ambitions and campaigning across Nigeria without facing criticism.

He also mentioned his support for Jolly Nyame, who became governor of Taraba State and later appointed him chairman of the Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board. Kawas noted his early support for Peter Obi, stating that he campaigned for him without financial assistance and covered the travel costs for fellow clergymen.

He questioned the recent criticism of his political involvement, emphasizing the CBCN's longstanding commitment to political engagement.
