Kalu Advocates for State Police to Enhance Crime Response

On Thursday, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, expressed support for the establishment of state police during the Arise News Townhall event in Abuja. Kalu argued that the creation of state police would ensure quicker responses to crimes across the country.

He highlighted that the current insecurity ravaging Nigeria could become a thing of the past if state executives were given command and control over security apparatus at the state level. Kalu assured that the National Assembly has already put legal measures in place to alleviate fears of potential abuse by state governors.

He emphasized the importance of unbundling the central police system to allow for a more localized approach to policing, which would bring law enforcement closer to the people and ensure timely responses to incidents of crime.
