Sen Natasha Akpoti Calls for Police Independence in Abuja

During the Arise News Townhall held in Abuja, Sen Natasha Akpoti, representing Kogi Central, stressed the necessity for the Nigeria Police to maintain independence from political control to effectively combat crime and reduce insecurity. She highlighted that the police command must comply with the needs of ordinary citizens and proposed that the Nigeria Police Council, chaired by the President and comprising all 36 state governors, should not merely function as a political club but should genuinely serve the interests of Nigerians.

Akpoti also advocated for the deployment of technology to enhance security measures, referencing a TikTok post where bandits offered to distribute hundreds of millions of Nigerian Naira. She questioned why security agencies had not apprehended these individuals and called for citizen support in building a safer country.

Akpoti concluded by emphasizing the importance of local policing to address insecurity issues effectively.
