Lawyer Critiques Nomination of Ex-FUOYE VC as Ambassador

Human rights lawyer Frank Tieti raised alarms regarding the nomination of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador. In an interview on Arise Television on Thursday, Tieti described the nomination as a "huge mistake." He urged the Nigerian Senate, which confirmed the nomination on July 7, 2026, to reconsider, citing concerns over Fasina's alleged involvement in human rights violations and the ongoing court cases against him.

Tieti emphasized that the nomination sends a negative signal about Nigeria's representation abroad, especially given the scandals associated with the current government. He argued that the Senate should not confirm a nominee with such a "baggage" and highlighted the need for a shift in societal norms regarding accountability and representation.
