ASUU Approves Strikes at 20 Nigerian Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has approved varying degrees of industrial action at 20 federal and state universities across Nigeria due to frustrations over the “haphazard implementation” of the December 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. This decision was made during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja from August 8 to 9, 2026.

ASUU National President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, expressed the union's concerns about the situation, warning that a resurgence of campus unrest is inevitable. The NEC resolved to permit industrial action once individual institutions meet internal union requirements.

The affected universities include Adekunle Ajasin University, Nasarawa State University, and others. ASUU also noted that the implementation status of universities in the Lagos Zone is under review.

The union criticized state governors for not endorsing the new salary package and accused federal officials of stalling promotion arrears and withholding salary releases. Additionally, ASUU raised concerns over unpaid salaries from a previous strike in 2022.
