ASUU Threatens Strike Over Unimplemented Salary Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised a fresh strike threat in Lagos, Gombe, and Plateau states, citing the failure of state governments to implement the 2025 federal agreement on salaries and welfare for university staff. During a press conference, ASUU leaders expressed growing discontent among lecturers, particularly at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Gombe State University, and Plateau State University.

The agreement, which includes a 40% salary increase for lecturers and provisions for academic research costs, was signed on December 23, 2025, and took effect on January 1, 2026. ASUU's Lagos zonal coordinator, Adesola Nassir, criticized Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for neglecting the implementation of the agreement, warning that failure to act could lead to industrial unrest and disrupt academic activities.

The union emphasized that the morale of university staff is declining, and the lack of government commitment to their welfare is unacceptable.
