ASUU Rejects Nigerian Government's 35% Pay Rise Offer, Raises Concerns Over Salary Restructuring

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the Nigerian government's proposed 35% pay increase for lecturers, citing concerns over the salary structure recommended by the former government renegotiation committee led by Prof. Nimi Briggs Piwuna.

ASUU insists on implementing the new salary scale for university lecturers, including a monthly payment of 1.2 million naira for professors. The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) recommended a compromise salary of 800,000 naira for professors, leading to a deadlock in the negotiations.

This rejection could potentially lead to renewed industrial unrest in the tertiary education sector.
