ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike at Imo State University

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Imo State University (IMSU) Owerri Branch, announced a total and indefinite strike on August 10, 2026, due to the non-implementation of a 2025 agreement with the Federal Government. The announcement was made during a press conference by the branch Chairman, Stephen Oguji, and Secretary, Lazarus Chikwendu.

The agreement, signed on December 23, 2025, was intended to enhance the welfare of academic staff and was set to take effect from January 1, 2026. ASUU IMSU expressed disappointment over the failure of both the Imo State Government and university management to implement the agreement, despite multiple engagements and a 21-day ultimatum issued by the union.

The union highlighted ongoing issues such as non-payment of promotion arrears since 2016, unpaid salaries for many members, and the withholding of check-off dues. ASUU IMSU stated that they would not return to work until the agreement is fully implemented.
