UK Suspends Study Visas for Four Countries Amid Asylum Surge

The UK government has implemented an unprecedented measure to suspend study visas for individuals from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, effective March 5, 2025. This decision follows a significant increase in asylum claims from these nations, with a reported 133,760 individuals claiming asylum through legal entry routes over the past five years.

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, noted that nearly 40% of asylum claims in 2025 are expected to come from student visa holders, with claims from these four countries rising dramatically—by 470% from 2021 to 2025. The government aims to reduce asylum support costs, currently at £4 billion annually, by limiting the number of asylum seekers entering through study visas, which account for 13% of claims.

The new immigration rules coincide with broader asylum reforms, including a review of refugee status every 30 months and expectations for unaccompanied minors to receive five years of leave. The Home Office emphasizes the need to maintain a balance between aiding genuine refugees and controlling immigration.
