Nigeria, Jamaica Face UK Visa Restrictions Over Reparations

Nigeria and Jamaica are among several African and Caribbean nations at risk of facing visa restrictions from the UK government, as indicated by Home Affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf. This potential reform is a response to increasing demands for reparations for slavery, with countries like Nigeria and Jamaica formally requesting such measures.

The UK has issued 3.8 million visas and provided £6.6 billion in foreign aid over the past 20 years, but the government is now contemplating a cap on foreign aid spending. The issue gained prominence following a recent United Nations vote that called for reparations, where the UK abstained.

Critics, including Nigel Farage, have condemned the UN's stance, while Labour leader Keir Starmer emphasized a focus on the future rather than historical reparations. Ghana has taken a leading role in advocating for reparations at the UN, which is increasingly discussing the historical impact of slavery and the need for justice.
