Atiku Abubakar Promises to Restore Fuel Subsidy in 2027

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and current presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), announced his intention to restore Nigeria's petrol subsidy if he wins the 2027 presidential election. During a Facebook Live session, Atiku addressed concerns regarding the removal of the subsidy and its effects on Nigerians.

He stated that he initially did not oppose the subsidy removal but has since changed his stance, questioning the allocation of the funds saved from this policy. Atiku asked, “Where is the money?

Where has the subsidy money gone? Has it been used to improve healthcare, education or security?” He emphasized that if elected, he would restore the subsidy and demanded that anyone who misappropriated Nigeria's subsidy funds should return the money.

The removal of the petrol subsidy was announced by President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, leading to a significant rise in fuel prices and subsequent increases in transportation and living costs.
