Atiku Pledges Border Reopening, Southern Port Development for 2027

Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress's presidential hopeful, pledges that if victorious in 2027, he will unlock Nigeria's shuttered land borders while investing in port development across southern regions. On Friday, a video featuring the former Vice President was distributed by prominent ADC figure Dele Momodu, transmitting these pledges directly to his base.

Atiku maintains that shutting the borders in 2019 has wreaked enormous economic havoc. He emphasized that Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Benin Republic—all neighbouring the nation's northern territories—have been hit hardest, as boundary restrictions have devastated merchant activity spanning those frontiers.

Entrepreneurs involved in transborder commerce have shuttered operations, Atiku stated, while unemployment surged among Nigeria's younger population following the border lockdown. The two-pronged strategy—unlocking borders while advancing southern port capacity—constitutes a coordinated effort toward revitalizing commerce nationwide.

Enhanced port infrastructure in the south will permit merchandise to move without friction, he noted, allowing economies dependent upon regional trade in the north and north-east to bounce back. Both planks, Atiku insists, prove indispensable for creating employment and entrepreneurial openings for young Nigerians whose business ventures have deteriorated amid present limitations.

Atiku's remarks echo growing pushback against border restrictions, widely condemned for dismantling informal commercial networks and undermining regional fiscal ties. His proposals target inhabitants of frontier settlements and trade-oriented zones experiencing immediate financial strain due to existing constraints.
