Atiku's Fuel Plan Sparks Confusion: Subsidy or Production Support?

Atiku Abubakar's proposed approach to Nigeria's fuel sector has generated contradictory statements from his campaign team, leaving the specifics of his energy policy unclear. In recent weeks, aides speaking on behalf of the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate have presented different versions of what his administration would do regarding petrol pricing and government support for fuel.

Paul Ibe, one of Atiku's spokespeople, told media outlets that if elected in 2027, Atiku would bring back petrol subsidy on a temporary basis to help Nigerians and businesses recover economically. Ibe characterized this as a limited intervention tied to crude oil output levels, which would later be removed once the economy stabilized and productivity improved.

However, other members of Atiku's team offered a notably different framing. Phrank Shaibu, Atiku's Senior Special Assistant for Public Communication, stated that Atiku's energy proposal is not a return to Nigeria's previous import subsidy system. Instead, Shaibu described it as targeted support aimed at strengthening domestic refining and production capacity, with the goal of lowering transportation and manufacturing costs rather than subsidizing fuel prices directly. Shaibu characterized Ibe's earlier remarks as imprecise and misleading.

Atiku himself issued a statement through his communications office reiterating that his plan focuses on domestic production and reducing the overall cost of living, not recreating the old subsidy model that the Tinubu administration removed. The clarifications come amid public criticism from President Bola Tinubu, who has challenged Atiku's subsidy proposal. The conflicting explanations from Atiku's camp suggest either internal disagreement or unclear messaging on a central piece of his economic platform ahead of the 2027 election.
