Ruling House Sues Ogun Government Over Awujale Selection

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House in Ijebu-Ode has initiated legal action against Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Awujale kingmakers, and several others, including Ijebu-Ode Local Government Chairman Dare Alebiosu. The lawsuit, filed on August 21, 2026, by Chairman Abdulateef Owoyemi, Deputy Chairman Adedokun Ajidagba, and Vice Chairman Prof Fassy Yusuf, seeks to compel the completion of the selection process for the next Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

The claimants are questioning the legality of the state government's actions on January 20, 2026, which allegedly prevented the kingmakers from concluding the selection process. They are also seeking clarification on whether the government can halt the nomination process under the Obas and Chiefs Law.

The Awujale stool became vacant after the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona on July 13, 2025. The ruling house claims it was notified on December 2, 2025, that it was their turn to nominate a candidate, which they began on January 12, 2026.
