NAFDAC Discovers Ongoing Production of Banned Alcohol

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reported new instances of illegal production of banned sachet alcohol and alcoholic beverages packaged in PET bottles below 200ml in Lagos. During a press briefing on Tuesday, NAFDAC director-general, Prof.

Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that a week-long nationwide enforcement operation revealed that several manufacturers were still producing these prohibited products despite the compliance deadline having passed. The ban on the production, importation, distribution, and sale of sachet alcohol and PET bottles below 200ml was implemented to combat underage drinking, substance abuse, and alcohol addiction among Nigerian youths, supported by Senate resolutions as part of the National Alcohol Policy.

Enforcement teams conducted coordinated raids in Lagos, Ogun, and other states, targeting manufacturers, distributors, and retailers involved with the banned products. NAFDAC inspectors found factories actively producing sachet alcohol, recovering large quantities of banned 100ml PET bottles with production dates as recent as July 23, 2026, indicating continued production post-ban.

Additionally, some manufacturers allegedly relocated production equipment to unregistered facilities to evade regulatory scrutiny.
