Bauchi Assembly Proposes Renaming University to SAZU

The Bauchi State House of Assembly commenced a move to amend the 2024 law that renamed the state-owned university from Bauchi State University Gadau (BASUG) to Sa'adu Zungur University (SAZU). This initiative followed a motion presented during a plenary session on Friday by Dr.

Nasiru Ahmadu, the chairman of the House Committee on Education and member representing Madara Constituency. He argued that the current law identifies the institution simply as Sa'adu Zungur University without indicating its location.

The proposal aims to develop a different naming convention for universities in Nigeria, as many institutions retain references to their host communities. The motion received unanimous support from the members of the assembly, with Hon.

Saleh Hodi Jibir advocating for the restoration of the name Gadau to recognize the community's contributions to the institution's development. Hon.

Habibu Umar described the proposal as timely, emphasizing that the university's identity is strengthened when its name reflects its location. The assembly directed the Committee on Education to submit a report on the matter within one week.
