Opposition Parties Boycott Bauchi Local Government Elections

A coalition of opposition political parties in Bauchi State, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), African Action Congress (AAC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has declared a boycott of the local government elections set for August 17, 2026. The coalition, represented by Dr Ladan Salihu, described the elections as a “kangaroo election” intended to benefit the ruling party.

They criticized the elections for being conducted under the outdated 2008 Bauchi State Electoral Law, which they argue undermines the legal framework for the elections. The coalition highlighted excessive nomination and administrative fees imposed by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) as a significant barrier, claiming these fees are designed to weaken opposition parties financially.

They also criticized the electoral timetable for being overly compressed, limiting the time available for candidate selection and campaign activities. The coalition accused the arrangements of being structured to ensure a predetermined victory for the ruling party.
