Benue Assembly Minority Leader Abu Umoru Joins APC

Abu Umoru, the minority leader of the Benue State Assembly, has officially defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision was announced during a plenary session on Thursday, where Speaker Alfr Berger read Umoru's letter of resignation from the PDP and his entry into the APC.

Umoru represents the Apa Agatu state constituency and assumed his role as minority leader towards the end of the previous year. His switch to the APC follows the earlier defection of former majority leader Audu Dure.

The APC now commands 28 out of 32 seats in the assembly, while the PDP is left with four lawmakers. Umoru has been appointed as the deputy majority leader and explained that his decision was driven by political strategy rather than personal interest, emphasizing the need for unity in supporting the development agenda of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

This defection is seen as a setback for the PDP in Benue State, particularly ahead of the 2023 general elections.
