Benue State Government Launches Rape Reporting Desk

The Benue State Government has initiated a desk across Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps to address and curb incidents of rape. This announcement was made by Yangien Ornguga, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, during a meeting with the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Makurdi.
Ornguga highlighted the launch of a new website aimed at facilitating the reporting of criminal issues, particularly gender-based violence and rape, thereby easing the process for residents. He also mentioned a partnership with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to prosecute human trafficking offenders.
Ornguga noted the importance of updating outdated laws in the state to ensure effective legal practice and mentioned recent improvements in the judiciary's financial support, including clearing 13 months of salary arrears for casual staff and increasing their monthly pay from N5,000 to N30,000.
