Benue State Implements Flood Prevention Measures

The Benue State Government has initiated proactive measures to prevent flooding within the state, as stated by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Odoh Ugwu, during a press briefing in Makurdi on Tuesday. The government is conducting daily readings of water levels to determine when to evacuate residents from flood-prone areas.

This initiative follows a seven-day flood advisory issued by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, which warned of medium flood risks due to rising water levels at key monitoring stations. Ugwu noted that the state has prepared for the rainy season by ensuring all necessary equipment for water level readings is operational and by clearing drainage systems to facilitate water flow.

He also mentioned that ongoing road construction in Makurdi has contributed to flood control, particularly in areas previously affected, as these roads include well-planned drainage systems. Additionally, Ugwu urged residents not to dispose of waste in waterways and announced efforts to remove structures obstructing drainage.
