NEMA Identifies Causes of Frequent Boat Accidents in Nigeria

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has identified several critical factors contributing to the frequent boat accidents and capsizing incidents on Nigerian waterways. Dr Ishaya Isah Chonoko, the Director of Disaster Risk Reduction at NEMA, stated that ageing wooden boats, overloading, and submerged trees are major causes of these mishaps.

He explained that many wooden boats remain in operation for extended periods, leading to deterioration due to prolonged exposure to water and sunlight, which increases the risk of capsizing. Chonoko noted that many boat operators overload their vessels with passengers and goods to maximize revenue, which compromises stability and safety.

Additionally, he highlighted the danger posed by submerged trees in waterways, which can be difficult for boat operators to identify, leading to collisions that can result in capsizing. Chonoko urged for greater caution and the implementation of safety measures among boat operators and passengers to reduce the risk of accidents.
