NIWA Launches Reform to Enhance Inland Water Transport

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has initiated a comprehensive reform program aimed at phasing out unsafe boats and rebuilding jetties across Nigeria. Barrister Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, the Chairman of the NIWA Governing Board, announced this initiative during a media briefing following an inspection tour of NIWA facilities.

The board, alongside Managing Director Engin Yusuf Geri, is assessing NIWA's assets nationwide to identify infrastructure gaps for rehabilitation. Shagari emphasized the need to meet modern safety standards and eliminate vessels that do not comply with safety benchmarks.

The program will prioritize the procurement of safer, modern boats from indigenous builders to strengthen local capacity. Additionally, NIWA aims to enhance private sector participation in dredging and jetty development to unlock Nigeria's economic potential through its inland waterways.

The initiative also includes strengthening regulatory compliance and collaboration with security agencies to dismantle unauthorized jetty operations.
