Boko Haram Abducts Children for Recruitment, Says Presidency

The Presidency revealed that Boko Haram is actively recruiting children from vulnerable rural communities in North-East Nigeria, particularly after suffering casualties during military operations. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, disclosed this information during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He emphasized that many young individuals found in insurgent camps are victims of forced abduction rather than willing recruits. Bwala explained that when these individuals escape and return to government-controlled areas, they are processed under deradicalisation and rehabilitation programs, in accordance with international conventions on armed conflict.

He acknowledged public concerns regarding the reintegration of former insurgents, admitting that some have returned to terrorist activities after surrendering. Bwala noted that such recidivism is not uncommon in conflict situations globally.

The ongoing insurgency in Nigeria has lasted over a decade, displacing millions and resulting in thousands of deaths.
