Borno Commissioner Faces Backlash Over Voting Threats

Sainna Buba, the Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, has come under scrutiny following a viral video in which he threatened punishment for political opponents who do not support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The video was recorded during a campaign inauguration by the Tinubu City Boy Movement, a group backing President Bola Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign.

Amnesty International responded by demanding an investigation, labeling Buba's statements as reckless and a violation of Nigerian law, which protects citizens' rights to make free political choices. The organization warned that such rhetoric could foster a toxic climate of fear as the 2027 elections approach.

At the time of reporting, neither Buba nor the Borno State Government had issued an official response. This incident followed similar comments made by Danjuma Shekwolo, Chairman of Kuje Area Council, who told residents to vote for the APC or leave the area, drawing criticism from civil society groups.
