BPP Initiates Policy to Empower Women Engineers in Nigeria

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) is working on a new affirmative procurement policy aimed at increasing the involvement of women-owned engineering businesses in public projects. This initiative was announced by BPP Director-General Adebowale Adedokun, represented by Eugenia Ojeah, Head of the Energy Infrastructure Department, during a goodwill message at the 2026 International Conference, Exhibition, and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) in Abuja.
The policy seeks to promote economic inclusion and enterprise development while addressing barriers faced by women-owned businesses, such as access to finance and technical capacity. Adedokun emphasized that the policy would not compromise merit but would create mechanisms for eligible businesses to compete effectively.
APWEN President Chinyere Nnenna Igwegbe stressed the importance of positioning women engineers at the forefront of Nigeria's infrastructure development, particularly in response to climate change and urbanization.
