Court Orders Sowore's Remand in Kuje Prison

On June 16, 2023, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered activist Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), to be remanded in Kuje Prison. The court dismissed Sowore's application alleging bias against Justice Mohammed Garba Umar.

Sowore's remand is pending a hearing on his application to stay the execution of the court's earlier decision to revoke his bail and issue a bench warrant for his arrest. The matter has been adjourned until June 24, 2023, when the court will hear arguments regarding Sowore's new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika's motion to stay the previous order.

Sowore was present in court accompanied by supporters, and the court had previously granted a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for his trial. The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore for allegedly making false claims against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
