Sowore Released from Detention After Bail Restoration

Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, was released from the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre after a federal high court ruled to restore his bail. His bail, originally set at 200 million naira, required the deposit of his international passport and the provision of two sureties, including documentation involving property ownership in Abuja.

Sowore had been detained since June 22, 2023, after Justice Moham Umar temporarily remanded him due to allegations concerning a social media post that reportedly referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a criminal context. His previous bail was revoked following an alleged absence from court.

Upon his release on Tuesday, Sowore stated that his time in detention did not diminish his opposition to the current administration and expressed determination to continue his struggle for justice as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
