EFCC Freezes Osun State Account Before Election

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly imposed a "Post No Debit" restriction on an Osun State Government bank account held with First Bank, just 10 days before the state's governorship election scheduled for August 15. This account is primarily used for the payment of workers' salaries.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has accused the EFCC of planning to freeze state government accounts and those of top officials ahead of the election. The Osun State Government, represented by Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi, condemned the EFCC's actions as an attempt to disrupt the administration's activities leading up to the election.

Governor Adeleke asserted that the EFCC does not have the legal authority to impose such restrictions on state accounts. A source within the state administration confirmed that the account has indeed been frozen.

As of the report's filing, the EFCC had not provided an official statement regarding the account restriction, and the rationale behind the action remains unclear.
