Oyo Pupils and Teachers Freed After Two Months Captivity

On May 15, 2026, heavily armed terrorists abducted 39 pupils and seven teachers, including Principal Joel Adesiyan, from three schools in Oriir Local Government Area, Oyo State. Tragically, during the kidnapping, teacher Michael Oyedokun was reported beheaded, and another teacher, Joel Adesiyan, was shot dead while attempting to escape.

The terrorists demanded the release of detained commanders and payment of ransom, including two Hilux vehicles, under conditions related to Sharia law. The Oyo State Government, led by Special Adviser on Strategic Matters Bayo Onanuga, announced the victims' rescue on a Friday, confirming that no concessions were made to the terrorists.

The mass abduction sparked outrage across the state and prompted the Nigeria Union of Teachers to embark on a month-long strike, demanding intensified efforts for the victims' rescue. The strike was suspended in July, leading to federal intervention and coordinated security operations that ultimately resulted in the safe return of the abducted individuals.
