Shell Nigeria Workers Protest Pay Discrimination in Lagos

On Tuesday morning, Shell Nigeria workers, represented by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), protested by locking the gates of the company's Lagos offices. The protest was sparked by accusations of pay discrimination and modern slavery practices within Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO).

Workers claimed that the company's pay structure unfairly benchmarks Nigerian salaries against global standards without considering local economic conditions. They highlighted that while SNEPCO provided a car grant of N1 million, it was insufficient for purchasing a vehicle.

The protest caused significant traffic disruptions and limited access to the Shell building. Workers expressed frustration over management's failure to address their demands and called for government intervention, citing heavy workloads, stress, and poor working conditions.

The protest reflects ongoing tensions within the company, particularly regarding the treatment of Nigerian staff compared to expatriates.
