Broadcasters Demand Apology from Wike Over Comments

On April 3, during a media parley, Nyesom Wike made comments that have drawn significant backlash from broadcasters in Nigeria. Seun Okinbaloye, a journalist, highlighted the importance of political competition ahead of the 2027 elections and warned that the absence of a viable opposition could harm Nigeria's democracy.

Wike's remarks were described as inappropriate and potentially intimidating towards the media profession. Although Wike later clarified that he did not intend any physical harm, the media association expressed concern over the hostile environment for journalists.

They are urging Wike to apologize and reaffirming their commitment to press freedom. The group warned that failure to do so could lead to a coordinated boycott of press briefings and media engagements nationwide.

Dr. Ahm Tijani Ramalan Iban, chairman of Fide Duker Act, emphasized that violent rhetoric against the media would not be tolerated.
