NSIB Report: Causes of Enugu Air Runway Overrun

On July 23, 2026, an Enugu Air Embraer ERJ 170-100LR, registered as 5N-ENR, overran the runway at Oba Akenzua II Airport in Benin, Edo State, traveling 325 meters past the pavement. A preliminary report from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) identified several contributing factors: broken airport control tower equipment, an inoperative autobrake system, and obstructed visibility due to an uncompleted building.

All 68 passengers and crew members disembarked safely, but the aircraft sustained catastrophic damage. The NSIB report highlighted operational blind spots, including the failure of Air Traffic Control to provide a Runway Condition Report or Code.

The Flight Data Recorder indicated that the crew had to rely on manual braking due to the autobrake malfunction, and despite applying maximum brake pressure and deploying thrust reversers, the aircraft could not stop before exiting the runway.
