Buni Names Mahmud as Emir of Ngazargamu Following Tijjani's Death

Yobe State Governor Buni has appointed Mahmud to lead Ngazargamu Emirate after the death of Alhaji Tijjani Ibn Saleh Geidam, who passed away in Cairo.
Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has named Mahmud as the new Emir of Ngazargamu, filling the throne vacated by the death of Alhaji Tijjani Ibn Saleh Geidam. The appointment was announced this week in Damaturu, the state capital.
Mahmud replaces a traditional ruler whose reign was marked by efforts to foster peace and cohesion within the emirate and across Yobe State. The late Emir died in Cairo, Egypt, following an extended period of illness.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who hails from Yobe State, released a statement praising the deceased monarch's legacy in upholding institutional traditions and advancing stability. Shettima called on Nigerians to learn from the late Emir's life and to prioritize education as a tool for social progress.
Mahmud brings significant public service experience to the leadership role. He previously served as a member of the Yobe State House of Assembly and held positions within the state executive council spanning nearly two decades from 2007 to 2026.
He also served as Commissioner for Livestock Development and held the traditional title of Turakin Ngazargamu for 16 years before his elevation. Chairman of the Northern States Governors' Forum, Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State, also issued a condolence message, describing the late Emir as a symbol of unity and progress whose administration was defined by wisdom and dedication to the welfare of his subjects.
Yahaya noted the deceased ruler's commitment to social development and harmonious coexistence. The succession marks a transition in one of northern Nigeria's significant traditional institutions.
