Bureaucracy Hinders Health Fund Access in Kano State

Dr. Suleiman Illiyasu, the state epidemiologist of Kano, stated that bureaucracy and knowledge gaps among stakeholders are significant barriers to accessing health funds, particularly the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

In an interview regarding the Capstone Project Connect, he explained that while the BHCPF is available at the national level, its full utilization at the state level is hampered by administrative bottlenecks and a lack of technical capacity. Illiyasu noted that poor coordination and irregular engagement among implementing actors further complicate the implementation of health financing programs.

He called for stronger monitoring systems and digital tracking tools to enhance transparency and accountability in health fund management. Muhammad Gimba also emphasized the need for improved monitoring of the BHCPF's implementation in Kano State to ensure that funds reach vulnerable communities effectively.

Despite efforts to improve emergency response structures, the current funding levels are insufficient to meet the growing demands of the state's population.
