UEFA, AFC, CONCACAF Criticize Infantino Over World Cup Sale

UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF issued an open letter on Monday condemning FIFA President Gianni Infantino for his handling of a proposed sale of a stake in the commercial rights to the World Cup. The letter accused Infantino of breaking trust through deception and placing himself above the collective interests of football.

The confederations demanded a fully independent review of the situation, emphasizing the importance of unity in football. Infantino's proposal aimed to sell 20% of the World Cup's commercial rights to private investors for approximately $4.2 billion, which has sparked significant backlash.

The letter suggested that this could be an opportunity for Infantino, who is seeking re-election next year, to resign with dignity. UEFA, supported by AFC and CONCACAF, threatened to boycott FIFA tournaments unless they received assurances against similar proposals in the future.

The confederations are also exploring the possibility of organizing competitions among themselves amid the ongoing crisis with FIFA.
