INEC to Use Technology for Campaign Fund Monitoring

Ahead of the presidential and National Assembly elections set to begin on August 19, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced its intention to deploy technology-driven innovations to monitor political parties' compliance with campaign funding limitations established in the 2026 Electoral Act. This decision follows assertions from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding the impracticality of curbing election spending.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) affirmed its commitment to adhere to the 2026 Electoral Act's provisions on election spending, while the Labour Party (LP) claimed its campaigns do not involve significant financial backers, thus minimizing the risk of violating electoral laws. Wilfred Osilama Ifogah, INEC's Deputy Director in charge of Publicity, stated that the Election and Political Party Monitoring (EPM) department is tasked with tracking and monitoring party finances and campaign spending.

Dr. Baba Bila, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Election and Party Monitoring Committee (EPMC), emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in political finance, noting that the future of election administration relies on effective technology deployment.
