Biafran Agitator Simon Ekpa Sentenced to 6 Years in Finland, Exposing Nigerian Court Inefficiencies

The trial and sentencing of Biafran separatist agitator Simon Ekpa in Finland have raised questions about the efficiency of Nigerian courts. Ekpa was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison by a Finnish District Court for participating in a terrorist organization and inciting crimes.

The Finnish court found Ekpa guilty of using social media to stoke tensions in the Biafra region from August 2021 to November 2024. Ekpa was arrested in November 2024 and charged in May 2025 for suspicion of terrorist activities.

This case highlights the contrast in the speed of justice between Finland and Nigeria, where trials often face delays. President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam, commented on the need for improvement in the Nigerian justice system.
