Canada Sets New Rules for Temporary Resident Permits

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has published five key rules regarding temporary resident permits for foreign nationals. These permits allow individuals to enter or remain in Canada on a short-term basis, even if they are otherwise inadmissible.

The permits grant temporary resident status but are issued for a limited time and can be canceled at any moment, meaning holders do not have a guarantee of staying for the initially indicated duration. Importantly, holding a temporary resident permit does not permanently resolve a person's inadmissibility to Canada, nor does it fulfill any requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

The application fee for an initial temporary resident permit starts at $246.25, although exemptions exist for vulnerable groups such as victims of human trafficking, family violence, and those previously in state care, who are not required to pay fees for various permits.
